“I trust that my hard work will pay off.”

I completely agree with Tyler because I know that if you work hard you will accomplish your dreams and achieve great things in the process. I also think that this statement reminds me of a saying that says that you should work hard now so that you don’t have to later on. That to me also says that I should work hard today to achieve my dreams that way I don’t have to later on. An example of this is me in high school right now. I am determined to keep working hard and am dedicated to volunteer work. I will work hard during high school so that I could be accepted into the college/university of my choice. As an example, I want to focus in human behavior so I will continue to understand my human body system class, as well as my physiology. I have also accepted the responsibility of the vice presidency of key club and will continue to work hard and do more volunteer events. I am working hard day and night to be the best student I could be. This will take me farther than just laying around my house. I will continue to look at this statement by Tyler Haws and work even harder today so that I can achieve my goals. The achievement of my goals is the pay off itself. It may also have even more of a payoff when I see that I got a job or even my own office.  

“ True independence and freedom can only exist in doing what ‘s right.”

Brigham Young has founded one of the purest universities in Utah and is providing today’s student success statement. In the statement he states that true independence can only come from doing what is right. I see what he means and agree. I agree that only people who go good and do it the right way are the ones that are able to produce good things. With good things come freedom and independence. Freedom is given to those who have shown that they can handle themselves as is independence. This is all the way true because someone who can commit greatness will do it because they can do it on their own,; they don’t need help form drugs or anything along the lines of that. This statement has been relevant my whole life. For example, because I do my work and do good in school my parents have always given me more freedom than they give my siblings. They do this because they know that I do what’s right so they rust me to keep doing what’s right and as a reward. I know that if I do something that they are not okay with they are going to limit they give me. Another example is a prisoner. If a prisoner behaves well they will be let out early and be given their freedom because they chose to do the right while in jail. Overall, I will continue to abide by this statement because I do benefit from it.

“They’re only truly great who are truly good.”

What I think this statement by George Chapman means is that those who are really good are great. That means that those who do things the right way by being CTR people are the people who are actually the greatest. How can you be the greatest at something if you do it dishonestly. An example I can think of is an athlete. If an athlete takes enhancing drugs to be able to swim faster than they will win and get the recognition and prize that comes with winning. That swimmer will be labeled as a great athlete even though they cheated they will be recognized. Deep down that athlete knows that they will not deserve the praise they get because they cheated to be the greatest. That makes them less than the greatest. You can only be the greatest or the best if you do things the right way. If you cheat to get to the top you will not be the best you will be the worst. The worst, for doing the wrong thing. I agree with Chapman’s that only by doing things truly good you will be the best.  

Optician

Duties and Responsibilities: An optician will usually follow an ophthalmologist's and optometrist’s prescription and help the patient find a frame or contact lens. What they will do is measure the patient’s face and distance between pupils to get their glasses size. They will provide you with information on the latest glass technology like anti-reflective coatings or prescribed UV lens. They will also fix your broken glasses and frames. The most important part of their job is to keep track of the patient's prescriptions over time.   

Salary: An optician will make on average $34,840 a year.

Education: To become an optician you will need a high school diploma or at least something equivalent to that. You then receive on the job training. Some opticians will complete an apprenticeship program that takes 2 years.  

Demand for this profession: This career pathway is estimated to grow 24% from 2014 through 2024.

Reflection:I am not really intrigued by it because thats a job where you only see patients once and I like talking so for that reason, I feel like this job isn’t for me.

“Many think that the short term gain will be worth the long term pain, but it isn’t. In addition, using steroids is cheating, and there is nothing worse is sports than a cheater. Don’t do it.”

The provider of our student success statement is George Mitchell and he goes over how bad it is to cheat. I believe that when he said short term gain he meant what you gain from cheating. Like maybe a medal or recognition. He then goes on to talk about how we think that that is worth the long term pain and by that I think he means the after effects of having done wrong. That would be like going to jail or getting a zero. He also talks about steroids and how they are considered cheating. I like the way that he incorporates steroids in here because I actually understand steroids so it gives me a different idea than just associating cheating with school. An example of this quote in school would be if you are taking a test  and you decide to cheat you might think that you did good by doing a little cheating but when you get your test back you notice that you got a zero. You got a zero because you got caught cheating. Cheating was your short term gain and the impact that zero had on your grade was the long term pain. I actually also like how he said,”Don’t do it,” because it was kind of funny. That is his way of avoiding cheating; by telling you not to cheat.

NON-Medical/ Health

Volunteer opportunities

There is this program in Huntington Park called LINC, and they do tutoring. LINC is an after school and summer tutoring program where they hold activities for the students as well as promote good social development and of course tutoring. They are looking for over 55 teens that will provide homework help, organize activities, being a positive role model, and cleaning the facility. You do need to be at least 16 because there is a background check required. Other than that you could go to http://www.linchousing.org/linccares/vol_form.html  and fill out an online application. After you will be notified and a schedule will be made for orientation .

Also about tutoring there is a program in downtown LA where you get to tutor homeless students. The good thing is that there is no experience necessary and they provide the training needed to volunteer. The tutors can be from any age over 12 but you will need parent or guardian consent.
