Optometry Technician or Assistant
Duties and Responsibilities: The optometry technician’s duty is to assist the optometrist during an eye exam or even in the clinic. These technicians can work in an optometrist’s office or in a clinic or other eye treatment facility. They will most likely be looking at pressure inside the eye, visual acuity, depth perception and color vision. They will also be responsible for checking the pupil’s reflexes. They can be doing hands on work or even just office work like making appointments or filing the patient’s history.
Salary: An optometrist technician or assistant will make $30,590 a year.
Education: To become an optometrist technician you will need at least a high school diploma. To be more competitive you will want an associate's which takes two additional years. There are also programs that allow you to prepare for this occupation.
Demand for this profession: There is an expected increase in the years 2014-2024 of 23%.
