Operating Room Technician
Duties and Responsibilities: An operating room technician is in charge of creating an optimal environment for surgical patients. There are three different types of operating technicians and those are the scrub surgical technologist, the circulating surgical technologist and lastly the second assisting technologist. The scrub technologist will hand the surgeon the necessary tools to proceed with the surgery. Their overall job is to make sure that the patient is well taken care of and has the best care throughout the surgery. The circulating technologist is in charge of making sure the patient is ready for surgery. They will prepare for surgery by getting all the tools needed and by preparing the patient to undergo surgery. They will also make sure that all paperwork is done and is ready for the operation. Lastly, the second assisting technologist is responsible for assisting the surgeon. That means that they are going to be holding clamps or dressing the incision. They will not do any physical changes to the body.
Salary: An operating room technician will make $45,940 a year.
Education: To become an operating room technician you will need to be a graduate from an accredited surgical technology program. You will also need a 9-15 month long program of training and a 2 year associate's degree.
Demand or Need for this profession: There is an increase of 15% that us going to take place from 2015.
